Writing as a Photographer – Revenge of your High School English Teacher

I have a mug at my desk. It says, “I’m silently correcting your grammar.” On the internet, it feels like grammar is optional, but spelling, grammar and word usage errors can damage your credibility. Sure, your clients are more concerned with your photographs than if you end a sentence with a preposition- but remember that your blog is a huge way to help reach your prospective clients.

Luckily, you don’t have to have an MFA in creative writing to sound good, just make sure to pay attention to common errors. We have listed some below that should help you as a photographer when you go to write your blog posts.

Grammar Counts

• Apostrophes are for possessives, not for plurals.
  • “These are Sam’s things” as opposed to “These thing’s are here.”

• Understand there, their and they’re
  • “There” is a place. “Their” belongs to them. “They’re” is a contraction for they are.

• Irregardless is not a word.  I swear. It’s actually a word that has evolved over time from two other words:  regardless and irrespective. It has showed up in print for years, but it is actually improper English.

• Use caution with lists and commas.
  • When listing items, make sure that you separate with commas. This helps to avoid confusion.
